Fuel — central excise ₹21.90/L petrol, ₹17.80/L diesel, plus your state's VAT on the pre-VAT price. As of Jul 2025.
Food delivery — 5% on food and packaging, 18% on delivery and platform fees. From 22 Sep 2025.
Everyday items — GST 2.0 slabs, 0 / 5 / 18 / 40%. Prices include GST, so we work backwards from what you paid. Some items switch rate above a price; we pick from the amount.
Alcohol — no GST. State excise and VAT, by state and by type, as a rough share of the shelf price (as of May 2026, from the ISWAI share-of-price study and state price sheets) that you can edit; we remember your edits. Karnataka now charges by pure alcohol, so cheap bottles carry a bigger share than premium ones. Gujarat and Bihar are prohibition states.
Vehicles — GST 18% small cars and bikes ≤350cc, 40% larger, 5% electric, plus state road tax by price slab. Imported CBU: customs duty first, then 40% GST. Used: dealer pays GST on its margin; you pay transfer and road tax.
Property — state stamp duty and registration; 5% GST on under-construction (1% affordable).
Gold, silver — 6% customs duty inside the metal price (since 24 July 2024), 3% GST on the metal, 5% on making.
Investing — STT, stamp duty, exchange and SEBI charges, 18% GST on brokerage. Mutual fund expense ratios carry 18% GST on the fund's fee, about an eighth of the ratio.
Capital gains — equity 20% under a year, 12.5% over a year above ₹1.25L a year. Debt funds, FD interest: your slab. Gold, property, unlisted: slab under 2 years, 12.5% over. Plus 4% cess.
Salary — TDS is income tax. Professional tax is a state tax, counted with hidden tax. Change salary from any month; earlier months keep the old figures.
Other income — at your slab. Rent: 30% off first. Freelance 44ADA 50%, business 44AD 6–8%. Lottery 30% flat. Gifts from relatives, agriculture: exempt. Tax due, not deducted.
